JESUS is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

Roy Butler

Do you like Contemporary Christian music?

I met my sweet wife by playing her song on a request show I used to do "Back in the day" on www.kslr.com when we still had segments of live Christian music!

CCM is a broad area. Some of it is good, some is just awful. I think it's generally inappropriate for worship but is probably okay for an evangelistic service, maybe for a Christian social event.

Some I've heard is way too sensuous, and I've heard some that can become "secular" love songs by just replacing any appearances of "Oh, Jesus" or "oh, Lord" with "Oh, baby." In fact, I think there are some "crossover" songs (Amy Grant comes to mind) that were released as both worship songs and secular love songs.

"Contemporary" I think refers to the beat and the instrumentation, rather than the age of the song. "Contemporary" music in church is usually not really contemporary, i.e. rap music, techno, etc. but is instead 60's and 70's style music; the stuff we aging hippies like. So I listen to some around the house, but while the words may be encouraging or edifying, with few exceptions it does not elevate me to worship. "I Can Only Imagine" is one of those exceptions, and there are probably more that I'm unaware of. I listen to Pat Boone on Saturday mornings for my weekly dose of CCM.
